£50,000 has been offered by police, as a reward for any information about a gang of Northern Ireland men who hijacked a lorry on the M53 near junction seven.
The incident occurred at the beginning of August when five men, who were posing as vehicle inspectors in a van which looked remarkably like a Vehicle and Operators Services Agency Car, ordered a lorry driver to pull over.
Once the driver had stopped, four of the gang got out of the vehicle and threatened the lorry driver at knife point to drive to docks near Liverpool and exchange his container for one that contained £1m worth of cigarettes.
The driver was then followed by the gang to a service station near Chester where they attached the trailer to one of their own vehicles and then drove to North Lincolnshire and abandoned the distraught driver.
