Wheel clampers along with traffic wardens are probably the most hated service by vehicle owners, however more and more seem to be patrolling the streets many of whom illegally clamp the cars of unsuspecting motorists.
The government promised to review the situation with the cowboy clamper however the RAC reported that there had been an increase in the number of registered clampers to over 2,100 in December from 1,900 in March 2008.
This means that many shoppers hitting the sales this week could find their cars impounded by a wheel clamp especially when busy shopping centre's suffer from inadequate parking. This is also the cowboy clampers favourite season as it means plenty of people will through caution to the wind and leave their cars in inappropriate spaces.
Professor Stephen Glaister director of the RAC Foundation said that motorists and shoppers alike should be careful when leaving their car and perhaps they should even seek alternative ways to reach the shop in this year's January sales.
On the other hand Glaister urged the government to keep to their promise and crack down on cowboy clampers and to deliver the promised cap fees and fines and to set a binding code of conduct for licensed clampers.
