Urban streets to get 20 mph limit in Government bid to cut road deaths
Urban road speed limits are set to be cut to 20 mph under Government plans to reduce road deaths by a third during the next decade.
Currently more than 3,000 people die each year on UK roads. Under the new proposals minister want to see this number cut to about 2,000 by 2020.
The plans include using speed cameras that can calculate the average speed of a vehicle rather than road humps. The system would work by having cameras positioned at every entry and exit point of the lower speed limit zone to catch drivers speeding through it.
Variable speed limits are also planned for main roads with schools in close attendance. Drivers will be warned of the change in limit by digital signs reducing the speed to 20 mph while school pupils are arriving or leaving school.
