Uninsured Driver? The police have a crush on you
A record number of uninsured vehicles are being seized and crushed, according to figures released today by the Association of British Insurers. The police have seized over 100,000 uninsured vehicles so far in 2007. This is an increase from 78,000 in 2006. An increase in roadside checks, automatic number plate recognition and improved data sharing between insurers and the police and DVLA has played a large part in this. Of these cars seized, over 45,000 have now been crushed.
Nick Starling of the Association of British Insurers, said:
“Uninsured drivers are a menace. The cost of compensating their victims adds an extra £30 a year to premiums paid by honest motorists. These figures show that the determination of the insurance industry, and the police to drive them from our roads is beginning to bear fruit.”
Ashton West of the Motor Insurers’ Bureau added, “The fight against uninsured drivers has now stepped up a gear, and we expect vehicle seizure numbers to increase over the coming months.”
