In an attempt to cut down on the number of uninsured vehicles on the road the government will be implementing fines for all owners of vehicles who do not hold a valid insurance policy.
Uninsured drivers currently cost the average car insurance customer an extra £30 a year due to the number of claims that have to paid out each year by the insurance industry to compensate drivers who have been hit by a vehicle that does not have valid insurance.
Uninsured drivers kill 160 people each year and leave 23,000 injured. Most uninsured vehicles do not have tax or a valid MOT certificates, meaning the vehicle is not road legal. The government and police, who will be implementing the new measures in 2010, want to decrease the statistics of accidents involving uninsured drivers by issuing warning letters to the owners charging them a fee of £100, if they find that the vehicle has still not been insured the vehicle will be seized and destroyed.
