UK Vehicle Production Hits New Heights in 2007

Car production saw its sixth consecutive month of growth in December. The final quarter also saw the strongest rise for 22 years in final quarter production. According to the society of motor manufacturer and traders the year ended with 1,534,567 cars produced, up 92,482 units on the previous year, with some 1,185,459 being sent for export.

Commercial vehicle production was at its strongest since 1998, with the most growth coming from the light end of the market, although heavy production still ended on a high for 2007, up 3.1 overall and 75.2 heading for the export market.

With the UK also producing around 3 million engines a year, the figures reinforce the position in the automotive industry of a strong global manufacturing base for the UK.
