Two speeding tickets and your out

Motorists could be automatically banned from the road after two speeding tickets under the government’s new proposal.

The proposal would see new motorists banned from the road if they commit a single offence of doing 45mph in a 30mph zone or drivers who have held their licenses for more than two years having it revoked after two offences. Excessive speeds could be defined by 15 – 20 mph over the current speed limit, however this is not clear.

The final plans will be detailed and one would see a new sliding scale of punishments being introduced. The borderline cases where a driver only exceeds the limit by a few miles an hour would incur only two penalty points.

Some campaign groups feel the government is targeting the wrong type of driver by enforcing such harsh rules. They should be focussing on drink and drive drivers and drivers that speed excessively.
