The car of the future is here, shame about the fuel supply

The Honda FCX Clarity is the dream of green motoring, a completely emissions free vehicle. Although not too dissimilar in looks to the company’s other medium sized cars the only thing coming out of the engine is water.

It’s not the first emission free vehicle, but unlike electric cars that have chunky batteries that need to be plugged in at night, the Clarity provides its own power with the use of a hydrogen fuel cell. Honda believes that this represents the best opportunity to market a clean vehicle that has performance and capacity to rival its petrol powered counterparts.

The first cars to be had, on a lease basis, are going to be in California where infrastructure is in place, albeit modestly 5 filling stations, to provide customers with the hydrogen needed on a commercial basis. These should be later this year with about 100 being made available.

Honda would love to be able to offer the Clarity everywhere the problem being the lack of refueling sites; the one in the UK for example has just been taken out when the trial of fuel cell buses ended at the end of last year. And with only 6 other sites in the rest of Europe it may be some time before the Clarity makes it across the pond as a car for the masses.
