The department of transport (DFT) are under fire after it was revealed that they are considering cutting thousands of rural roads speed limits from 60 to 50 miles per hour without putting up the relevant signage. They will place a sign with a white circle and a black line through it, which could cause many unsuspecting drivers at risk of prosecution.
Road safety and motoring groups are protesting the change; they believe that if the speed limit is change the correct sign should be placed in the relevant areas. They do believe that some roads should have their speed reduced as it could save up to 250 lives a year, however not al rural roads should be affected with out the relevant reports showing how many causalities or fatalities they have had.
The DFT are considering a proposal based on evidence of information on casualties, emissions and journey times from the affected roads. The conservatives have supported the plan to reduce the speed, however they feel that the DFT should be targeting the most affected roads, problem drivers and have all road signs marked correctly as not to target responsible law abiding drivers.
