Honda has issued a mass recall after investigating complaints of faulty handbrakes on Civics allowing the cars to roll away after they have been parked.
Engineers have found a small safety risk of the release button being accidentally knocked by drivers when operating the handbrake. The flaw was identified in Civics built from 2006 to 2007.
UK drivers of affected cars will be receiving a letter from the company advising them of the problem and to take the car to their nearest Honda dealer to get a new handbrake fitted free of charge.
The company realised that this would cause an inconvenience for customers but felt that it had to act and take responsibility for the fault that could potentially put customers at risk.
This decisive action is in stark contrast with some other manufacturers whose models have experienced faults in the past such as GM and a similar problem with Vectras and with Renault’s faulty bonnet catches on some Clio’s.
Honda feels that it has a good relationship with the UK market, with the Civic being produced in its Swindon based factory, and has taken steps to ensure that it maintains it.
