Suspension and axle damage caused by potholes has increased by almost 50 per cent during January according to Warranty Direct claims figures.
If the claims that they have received have been replicated across the industry then more than 110,000 vehicles could have suffered damage to wheels, axles and suspension systems during the coldest month of the year.
It is expected for cold weather to have a detrimental affect on UK roads, especially with the high volumes of traffic that use the road networks, drivers are generally more aware about the state of the roads that they use during the winter months.
However evidence shows that the summer months of July and August also rank highly for vehicle damage due to deteriorating roads. Not many know that the oxidisation that occurs in the bitumen binder is caused by the suns UV rays and is at its highest during these months.
Therefore motorists have to be wary of potholes and inadequately maintained roads during the summer as well in order to try to minimise the damage and cost of repairs to their vehicle.
Some of the blame for the state of the roads has to put at the Governments doorstep for their patch and repair attitude to road maintenance that has left in the region of a £1 billion deficit in the up keep of the UK road network.
