Parked cars involved in a fifth of accidents

If you’ve ever returned to your car and found a new dent or ding in it then you are one of the growing numbers of owners whose parked car has been hit in an accident.

The greater congestion, drivers not concentrating and the rise in numbers of bigger vehicles on our roads have added to the number of incidents occurring.

There are some 700,000 shunts, scrapes or hitting of parked cars each year with the majority taking place in urban streets.

The three worst areas were London, with one in ten incidents, Glasgow, which has less than 200,000 registered cars within the city, and then Birmingham.

The worry for some is that their street will be classified as a parked car accident hotspot that will make it harder for them to gain competitive insurance cover if they park on street.
