The government confirmed on Monday evening that the first steps are being taken for the trials of the pay-as-you-go road tax where satellites will be monitoring the use of busy roads and motorways.
Volunteers will be invited to take part in the trials, including the use of black boxes being fitted to the dashboards of their vehicles that will be tracked by satellite.
The trials, which will be carried out over the next two years, will issue motorists with monthly or weekly bills charging them on where they have driven, which could be up to £1.30 a mile.
1.8m initially signed a petition when the plans were first discussed for the pay-as-you-drive taxes to be abandoned; however the trials will continue in hope to reduce the number of people making unnecessary trips.
