The upgraded Nissan pick-up has been re-assessed quicker than expected, with its improved air bag deployment software resulting in a vastly improved safety score.
NCAP published its findings, three stars for adult safety (an increase from a one star strikethrough) and four stars for child safety (an increase of one star from the original assessment), in response to Nissans prompt correction of the first test findings.
All new production Navaras are being equipped with the upgraded software and the company has also undertaken a service drive to upgrade already in service vehicles.
It’s hoped that by re-testing and issuing the results quickly NCAP will help to speed up the service drive to get the 7,000 current UK owners to get the modifications done sooner rather than later.
Of the original pick-up testers, Isuzu are still examining the safety issues for the D-Max/Rodeo and have yet to offer an improved vehicle for testing.
NCAP test results are published quarterly; with the next pick-ups to be tested being the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux (the type tested on Top Gear, that was blown up, dropped, rolled and basically just mashed, but then still started up), although no date has been specified.
