A propeller-powered ski buggy has been present by sports car makers Lotus. The buggy which runs on E85 biofuel can travel at speeds up to 84mph over snow and ice.
The concept ice vehicle, which can operate at temperatures of less than -72c has been designed for an expedition to the south pole by explorers Andrew Moon and Andrew Regan. Weighing in at just 350kg (790 lbs) it is light enough for the explorers to pull it over bumpy areas. The vehicle also has a radar which spots any crevasses hidden under the ice.
The one seated vehicle, which has a supercharged motorbike engine, was built by a former formula one chassis designer from microlight parts. Each component was tested by the designer along with it being put in a cold chamber at Lotus to test its ability to survive the freezing temperatures of the South Pole.
The expedition will be taking place to demonstrate the efficiency of biofuel, which can reduce emissions by about 70 per cent and also raise the awareness of climate change.
