The amount of stretch limos being hired for events such as hen nights and proms is on the up and there is wide concern about their safety.
West midlands and Wales’s traffic commission are concerned that illegal drivers may be driving these vehicles and the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) may not have checked the drivers.
When checking some of these issues it revealed drivers who were on the sex offender’s register were employed to drive.
From another point of view these vehicles can be as long as a bus and have up to 16 people seated. The safety aspect of the limos is important. With a lot being imported in to the UK from America, the safety features in place may be different, resulting in inadequate safety in place.
One other way that these popular forms of transport are created is by a process called “cut and shut”, where two vehicles are sliced in half and they add parts in between to stretch the length.
At present the government are looking at tightening the restraints on limos to make sure that all aspects of safety are covered.
