On the 12th February 2008, the Major of London has advised that from 27th October 2008, new CO2 charges will be introduced to the congestion charge.
A £25 a day charge will be introduced to those cars registered on or after the 1st march 2001 that produce above 225g/km of CO2, extended-cab dual-purpose pickups (with two rows of seats) with CO2 emissions larger than 225g/km or engines bigger than 3,000cc and cars registered before 1st March 2001 with engines greater than 3,000cc.
The Major is hoping that this new charge will discourage drivers to use vehicles that produce such high CO2 levels and start using public transport or even walking and cycling.
Approximately 80 of vehicles will not be affected by the new charge and will continue to pay the standard charge of £8.
