The Institute of Advanced Motorists has applauded the decision by Cornhill/Allianz to punish those drivers who have endorsements on their license from using a handheld mobile phone.
The company have described the offence a dangerous and needless act that they will now look to increase the insurance premium of any customer who has the endorsement at renewal.
With the new tougher penalties for driving with a hand held mobile phone over a year old drivers are still being caught breaking the law with 185,000 caught in 2007.
Cornhill/Allianz has decided to take a stand against the problem that, according to a recent survey, ten per cent of drivers admit to still using a hand held mobile behind the wheel.
If other insurers follow suit it could lead to drivers being hit in the pocket again for the same offence when their insurance comes up for renewal. If they fail to mention the offence then the driver runs the risk of having their insurance cancelled due to non-disclosure of a material fact.
