According to the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) the chances of making a successful claim when you put the wrong type of fuel into your vehicle are getting remote.
Putting the wrong fuel in can cause in the region of £5,000 worth of damage to the vehicles internal systems, but only 22 per cent of comprehensive insurance policies affirm that they will categorically pay out to have the matter rectified. On the other side 40 per cent of insurers have stated that they would not pay out a claim for filling up with the wrong fuel, with their policies containing a misfuelling exclusion clause.
For those drivers whose insurers don’t specify either way, the BIBA advises them that if they make this mistake at the pumps not to start their vehicle, but to notify a breakdown company and the petrol station at once. This may influence their insurer, that they have done all that they could to limit the damage to the vehicle, to pay out the claim.
