Illegal red diesel looks to have hit our roads again following the increase in prices of fuel.
The red diesel is a lot cheaper but should only be used for agricultural vehicles, such as tractors due to its reduced tax. To stop people from using the fuel illegally it is tinged with a red dye so that it can be easily traced. If vehicles are found using the fuel on the UK's roads that are not specific to the requirements they could receive a large penalty or even face having their vehicle seized.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have recently carried out a crack down on vehicles in the Northamptonshire and Warwickshire areas stopping random vehicles and testing if they are using the illegal fuel. Out of the 132 vehicles stopped by HMRC, seven were found guilty, this included six commercial vehicles. Six drivers were issued with £500 fines and one was let of lightly with a warning letter.
The crack down on red diesel users will continue over the country by HMRC who will continue to issue harsher penalties if needed to put a stop to the crime.
