The first government endorsed electric car trials are slowly being rolled our across the country. Residents in Birmingham and Solihull will soon be seeing the Mitsubishi i-MiEV strolling round the city centre.
Over 110 cars are to be tested by volunteers selected by researchers at Aston University in conjunction with the Coventry and Birmingham Low Emission Vehicle Demonstrators (cabled) Consortium, who will also be simultaneously monitoring the usage of the cars and also the practicality of the electric models in Birmingham.
They will pay particular attention to the infrastructure needed for electric cars namely the charging points which have to date been a major disadvantage to electric cars in comparison to their petrol cousins.
Following the talks in Copenhagen on climate change, the government has to take a marked step to improving our own carbon emissions. Carbon dioxide released from petrol cars across the country is a major contributor to the green house effect so a turn to electric cars will help cut down on the amount of green house gas emissions.
However as many petrol heads would claim, to date most electric cars have not had the same standard of specification, power and style as other more conventional cars. However this is set to change as several volunteer groups across the country are to be given a variety of electric cars to trial. Over 40 Oxford residents are set to be given an electric version of the British classic Mini Cooper.
Insure My Vehicle provides vehicle insurance for car owners across the country whatever make or model you own.
