Fines to double

Critics have called for tougher measures to ensure that motoring offences are been taken more seriously and enforced correctly. Next year motorists who fail to wear seatbelts will pay double the fixed penalty in an attempt to cut deaths on our roads. These new tougher measures will soon include back seat passengers and child seats

Campaigners are calling for more traffic police on our streets to ensure fines are been carried out. We have 1600 fewer traffic police manning our streets today than there were 10 years ago.

Studies have shown that in 2007, 942 drivers and 490 passengers were killed in road accidents. It is believed that a third of them were not wearing their seatbelts.

In some parts of Europe you would face a very expensive on the spot fine. If you do not have the cash on you, you will be taken to the cash machine. If you still cant pay your fine, you will spend a night in the cells. Although it seems harsh you will receive a free bed and breakfast for your time spent in jail.
