A range of electric vehicles have been launched at the Guildhall in London.
More than 340 cars, including the Mitsubishi MiEV and the Mini E will be trailed all over the UK in a £25m government-backed scheme. If the scheme is successful then the vehicles could go into mass production in the next 6 to 18 months.
The scheme also features a small number of hybrid plug-in petrol / electric cars. These hybrids must emit less than 50g of CO2 per kilometre to qualify.
David Bott, the head of the Technology Strategy Board who are behind the scheme said: “Electric cars are now credible. We are now looking at cars with a range of 150 miles and decent speed”.
Vehicles will be loaned to users for between 6 and 12 months to enable energy consultants TNEI, who are running the project, to get a comprehensive collection of data.
