The government are looking for families to exchange their petrol or diesel cars for a car that plugs in to the mains to charge.
The trial is taking place next year involving up to 100 electric cars in cities across the country but beware, although the running costs of the vehicle will be about 2p a mile and you will receive discounts on congestion charges plus you will be emitting less carbon dioxide, be prepared that the battery may run out on a journey and have to take a few hours to charge.
Even the most advanced electric cars that have been developed have a range of less than 40 miles before they need recharging.
The trial is part of a £100 million five-year programme that will demonstrate the vehicles also including commercial vehicles in the second part of the trial.
Initially the electric cars may seem expensive, however in the long run the cost will be lower due to the low operating costs. The only questions still remaining is how will a family living in a tower block be able to charge such a vehicle?
