The recruitment of hundreds of drivers is underway to participate in Government funded trials for road pricing systems that could eventually result in charges of up to £1.30 per mile for the most congested roads at peak times.
The trials will take place in four locations across the country, each run by a different company to trial different charging systems with a further three companies testing methods of enforcing the pricing scheme and ensuring its accuracy.
Satellite tracking technology is to be used to so that accurate charging can be made based on the time, direction of travel and congestion. An onboard unit would then automatically deduct payments from an account in the drivers’ name. It could also then collect all charges such as London’s congestion charges, bridge tolls and using new lanes on motorways.
