As the oil prices rocket, airlines are going to extreme lengths to remove vital pounds from the sky.
British Airways are reducing the weight of the passenger’s food, issuing new lightweight catering trolleys and forgetting cabin crew paperwork. These ideas are all in aid of making the aircrafts journeys lighter so they use less fuel.
Virgin Atlantic has reacted by cutting down on packaging, and hoping in the future they can create a package-free meal for their passengers.
Other airlines have also thought to slim down their cutlery and have brought in lighter porcelain plates for their first class passengers.
Airlines have decided to tackle the issue of weight as British Airways fuel costs reach £8 million a day so the decrease in weight is ever more important.
Paul Charles, spokesman for Virgin Atlantic has said, “when you add it all up for every flight each year it does matter. Basically you need less fuel to power flight if it is lighter”.
