It is an increasing concern that smaller businesses are ignoring their driver's safety whilst out on the road, including the ignorance of the hours they have been driving, eye tests, the use of mobile phones and even the loading of their fleet vehicles.
The Corporate Manslaughter Act, which was introduced last year, and also the Revision of the Health and Safety (Offences) Act earlier this year, threatens employers against large fines and even jail for accidents that are caused within the workplace, including those that occur on the road due to a lack of Health and Safety.
Heavy equipment is usually found in the back of fleet vehicles that has not been strapped down, which would potentially cause a serious injury if the driver had to brake suddenly. Research, that was carried out by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) showed that even a metal first aid box that had not been locked away in the glove box could cause a serious head injury in a road accident.
