Commercial vehicle drivers are worst offenders
According to Belfast's city council, commercial drivers are the worst offenders for breaking the smoking ban, after 9 out of 10 drivers are fined, including van and taxi drivers. The smoking ban which was introduced in Belfast two years ago, out of the 230 fixed penalties issued 88 were due to people smoking in their vehicle. The council understood that there would be a settling in period for smokers, so time and money has been spent visiting businesses and employers to explain how the law affects them and their workers, including taxi drivers and goods delivery drivers. If you drive for a living smoking behind the wheel is against the law, and needs to be stopped, otherwise you will be fined with an on the spot £50 fine. Commercial vehicles that are used by more than one person must also display a no smoking sign and failure to do so will also receive a fine of £200.
