According to a new report commissioned by LV=, formerly Liverpool Victoria, the number of top-of-the-range vehicles stolen has now risen by 38 percent in 2008 despite an overall drop of 11 percent in the number of car thefts across the country.
It would also appear that thieves are also getting more picky about the age of the cars as the average age dropped from 10 years old in 2005 to 8 years as more top-market cars have been stolen.
Car owners of advanced models are being urged to check vehicle insurance policies so that should the worse happen that they are covered.
The survey also reported that London is far more likely to suffer from vast quantities of stolen cars than any other city, with Manchester unsurprisingly being second on the list. Cardiff, Birmingham and Leeds also all made it into the top five cities for above average car crime.
A member of the investigator team explained that more high-specification cars carry more sophisticated security measures which deter the common opportunistic thief. So it is the owners of super cars and high range vehicles that have to specifically vigilant in the safety of not only their cars but their homes as well.
A spokesman said “many organised crime thieves will break into a persons house to secure the keys to their car, which are then sold abroad.”
