According to the latest statistics from the Department for Transport (DfT) it seems that motorists are sticking to 30 miles per hour in great numbers rather than speeding through these restricted zones.
It is thought that hard hitting television campaigns and the increasing number of speed cameras are the reason behind this change.
Looking back at years of figures it is apparent that in the past ten years drivers in general have reduced their speeds, especially among car drivers. The DfT have stated that 70 of cars travelled in the excess of 30 miles per hour limit in 1997, but by last year this had fallen to less than half.
Other statistics from the Department for Transport state that there is fewer road deaths, road deaths have fallen below 3,000 which is a first since records began in 1926. This could be linked to the decreasing speeds that people are making year after year in their cars.
