Burgeoning racer killed in freak F2 collision

Monday morning witnessed the death of a budding new formula two (F2) driver Henry Surtees, son to the great John Surtees, in a tragic F2 motoring racing accident.

Surtees' competitor, Jack Clarke's car careered off course whilst heading round the bend at Brands Hatch in Kent, hitting the tyre wall. A loose wheel on the F2 car hit the young Surtees in the head knocking him unconscious and causing his own racing car to collide with the trackside barrier.

Surtees had the competitive motor racing blood in his family, as his father John Surtees won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1964. The grief-stricken father confessed that his son would be deeply missed and that despite his age he showed an uncanny maturity and technical understanding of motor racing.

Henry Surtees, who had won world championships both in the car and on the bike, managed to balance his passion for motorsport and his school education. Sadly, the 18 year old racer died before he discovered his A-level results and he had been enjoying the freedom achieved by leaving school to enjoy his love for the race.

Commentators joined his famous father in sending condolences remarking that had Surtees only been a few seconds further behind Clarke he would have escape unharmed and his recent death only portrayed the danger present in the games.
