The Environment minister has announced this week that steps are going to be taken to Ban motorists from lighting up behind the wheel in Northern Ireland.
Measures are currently being considered by the minister to cut the number of fatal accidents across Northern Ireland by 2010. Ms Foster commented that this would be one of a range of proposals being considered in the preparation of a new road safety strategy.
In April 2006 a driver was sentenced to five years behind bars for two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and one count of causing grievous bodily injury after he ploughed in to a group of children walking a dog in west Belfast after his cigarette caused him to suffer a coughing fit.
The department of the Environment are yet to consider or speculate of what the penalties should be if smoking whilst driving is made illegal.
