Automatic speed limiting devise launched

A new technology known as intelligent speed adaption (ISA) could be fitted in buses, taxis and council vehicles to prevent them from exceeding the speed limit.

A trial for the devise, which uses satellite tracking and a digital road map, is to be tested this summer on roads inside the M25.

The ISA’s technology allows drivers to select an option that will not allow them to go physically go over the speed limit and will slow down automatically if the driver fails to notice the a new speed zone. Estimates hope that if two thirds of London drivers installed the devise road casualties would be reduced by 10 percent and in affect reducing congestion.

Less fuel would be consumed if drivers installed the devise, lowering the pollution. Also if vehicles are having to obey the speed limits, this would have a knock on effect to other drivers behind them who would also have to stick to the limits, however concern is being shown that this could result in dangerous overtaking.

The ISA is hoping to be offered to private motorists next year after results are published in the spring following its 6 month trial this year.
